UNIT 6 Discussion 1:

Adverse Childhood Experiences
In this unit’s study activity, you were directed to take the Adverse Childhood Experiences Survey. Your maximum score is a possible 10; however, research shows that any score over three puts you at risk for many of the behavioral and physical consequences related to ACE scores. You need not share your score, but please comment on how you might use this assessment tool in the future with your clients; address how you might use the five pillars of TIC to address high ACE scores with your clients. http://www.acestudy.org/the-ace-score.html
Readings
Use your Applied Human Behavior in the Social Environment text to complete the following:
• Chapter 17, “Trauma and Abuse Influence on Human Behavior,” pages 382–414. This chapter gives definitions of child abuse, neglect, and the short-term and long-term consequences for the child and others involved in the case, including post-traumatic stress disorder. It also discusses trauma experienced as an adult, such as assault, rape, or terrorism, as well as resilience as an alternative to negative outcomes for children and adults.
o Please review Lundahl and Hull: Chapter 17 [PPT] as you read through the chapter.

Unit 7 Discussion 1
Media, Socialization, and Deviancy
Television is a source of socialization that influences how we, as a society, view deviancy. This week, take the time to view one night’s programming on television. For this discussion, list at least two programs presented and state:
• The names of the programs.
• Your perception of the social message of that program, with examples.
Keeping in mind your readings on deviancy this week, how do these shows confirm or negate the larger societal messages about deviant behavior?
Readings
Use your Applied Human Behavior in the Social Environment text to complete the following:
• Read Chapter 18, “Socially Deviant Behavior,” pages 415–443. This chapter offers definitions of socialization and social control; lists reasons for anti-social and delinquent behavior; and suggests that much deviant behavior ends in adulthood.
o Please review Lundahl and Hull: Chapter 18 [PPT] as you read through the chapter.

Unit 8 Discussion 1

The Challenges of Poverty
After reading this unit’s textbook chapter and watching the Dr. Payne video, list three areas where the text agrees with Dr. Payne, and three areas where they differ. Then, comment on which side you agree with and why. Substantiate your position with at least one journal article; use the Capella Library, linked in the Resources, to search for relevant articles.
