Case Study
Critically analyse the project management case study from the perspective of project governance.
• Report of the Ministerial Inquiry into the Novopay Project,

Conduct your analysis based on the description of what happened in the case given in the document provided. You can, but you are not required to, draw additional information about what happened in the case from other sources, such as news reports.
Use theory from the textbook and other project management/organisation studies literature to support your analysis. Reference your sources. Do make sure that you include page numbers where appropriate (such as when citing the textbook or the document introducing the case). Some marks will be given for presentation and for referencing.

Case study analysis
In case study analysis you apply theory in context of the case.
To apply theory in context of the case, you need to know what happened in the case very well. You need to analyse how the theory applies in context of specific events. For example, you would not just write about dysfunctional conflict in general. Rather, you would write about conflict between specific people, in specific roles, over specific issues, and argue why this specific instance of conflict is dysfunctional and what are the options to manage it and the likely consequences, based on your knowledge of the theory, citing theory sources.
The overall theory domain to focus on is given in the assignment specification. However, you do not need to cover the whole of the domain. Rather, you choose the aspects of the theory that you would like to focus on, based on your interests, your background, and on what happened in the case. Do state, which aspects of the theory you are going to focus on at the beginning of your analysis, with justification. Do briefly introduce the theory you are going to apply, but do not limit your report to introducing the theory.
Some common pitfalls resulting in low marks are
• Simply describing what happened in the case, rather than applying theory.
• Simply describing theory, rather than applying it in context of the case.
• Copying the analysis already provided in the description of the case, rather than conducting your own analysis.
To get high marks, you need to conduct critical analysis. There are many ways to make your analysis critical. Some examples are criticizing the decisions taken in the project based on your knowledge of theory and criticising theory based on what happened in the case. In principle, it is possible to criticise the analysis of the events provided in the case description, but this approach is risky, as you might slip into simply reproducing the analysis already given in the case description document. If you conceive your own approach to making your analysis critical, it makes sense to discuss it with the lecturer.
A very high quality analysis would be based on an intimate knowledge of what happened in the case (based on the document provided as well as, possibly, on other sources such as news reports). The analysis would not be limited to using the theory given in the textbook, but would demonstrate depth in theory understanding attained by drawing from sources such as journal articles. The analysis would be critical, but presented in easy to understand language, with the report structured and illustrated to simultaneously convey the necessary detail and to make it easy to understand the analysis.
