PROJECT 2 – POSTER
PRESENTATION
In this project you will create a poster on a topic of your choice. Select a topic that you

find
interesting and relevant, and preferably one that could be related to your degree or
professional interests. The poster template is available at the course content in D2L, you just
have to follow the directions and complete the different sections. This project aims to
contribute to the development of your research skills, as well as the skills necessary to
communicate findings through a poster.
This project is DUE on May 4th, 2016 before 11:30 PM. The dropbox will remain open until
midnight of the following day. Late submissions made through the dropbox will be penalized
with half of a grade (e.g. 100 becomes 95). Keep in mind that I do not accept submissions after
the closure of the dropbox. If you have any issues with the deadline, please contact me in

order
to make arrangements in advance.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After successful completion of this project, students should be able to:
1. Collect, manage, and analyze demographic data.
2. Apply knowledge and concepts seen in class.
3. Create a poster for academic and professional presentations.
LEARNING SKILLS
1. Processing information.
2. Data collection, management, and analysis.
3. Applying knowledge.
4. Critical thinking.
5. Writing skills.
ACTIVITIES & ASSIGNMENTS
1. Download the poster template that is available under Project 2 at the course content in
D2L.
2. Select a topic of your interest that is related to the content covered in the course. It

is highly
recommended to focus on one specific issue or problem. For example, a broad topic could
be mortality in the US and in order to facilitate your research, you can focus on

drug
induced deaths in the US. For that topic, you can find data on the Center for Disease
Control, the US Census, the World Drugs Report, and the National Drug Threat Assessment.

You can also use other sources, such as newspapers, journals, magazines. The following are
some broad topics that you can consider for your poster:
– Place and health
– Women reproductive health (contraception, HIV/AIDS, STDs, etc.)
– Internal migration (seasonal migration, most attractive cities for millennials, etc.).
– Immigration (human rights, border security, etc.)
– Main causes of death by age and/or race
3. The sections on the poster are:
– Title
– Abstract: write a short summary of your project (approximately 100 words).
What is the topic or issue?
What is your argument?
What kind of evidence (data and information) you used for the analysis?
What is the significance of your findings?
– Background: describe the issue or topic (approximately 300 words).
What is the issue or topic?
What is the period of time or year(s) that you will use for the discussion?
What is the place (country, region, state, or county) that you selected for the
analysis?
– Demographic profile: provide a demographic profile of the area selected for the
analysis (country, region, state, or county). You just have to describe the population
profile ONLY for the study area. Using data and information from different data
sources (World Factbook, US Census, Population Reference Bureau, Center for
Disease Control, World Bank, etc.) describe the demographic trends and patterns of
your study area that are relevant to contextualize your topic. Be selective and
include demographics indicators that are useful to frame your analysis. You must
cite the data sources and provide the references.
– Discussion: write your analysis as bullet points or a single text. Use concepts and
information covered in the course.
– Final thoughts: provide some final thoughts or conclusions about this project.
– References: Provide the references of the information and data used in the poster.
Follow the APA Citation Style that is available at:
http://www.library.arizona.edu/search/reference/citation-apa.html
4. Export the poster as a PDF file.
5. Submit the PDF file into the corresponding dropbox in D2L.
